I wanted to make a video to give a quick overview of Roger Deakins' new book, "Byways".

If you're watching this, I'll assume you know who Roger Deakins is, and so I won't bore you with those details.

To a lot of us aspiring cinematographers and filmmakers, he is a tremendous inspiration and influence. Arguably, one of the greatest working directors of photography in our generation.

With that in mind, I was always going to buy this book, even knowing that it has nothing to do with cinematography.

"Byways" is a collection of Roger Deakins' still photography over the years.

Although there are perhaps one or two, you won't find behind the scenes images in here, if that's what you're looking for.

It contains Roger's still photography over the years from various places, with a strong focus on his early life in the southwest of England.

This is one of the main reasons I was particularly drawn to this book, as I was born and raised in Devon, and it's wonderful to see how it is documented through Roger Deakins' eyes.

It's fascinating to see how he chooses to capture the decisive moment with his stills, as well as the compositions and use of light.

I'd recommend picking up the book if you're a fan of Roger Deakins' cinematography work and are interested to see this other side.

Even if you've never heard of the man and are keen on collecting monographs, street or film photography, I'd say it's worth picking up as it's a great addition to any collection.
