Making my first YouTube video

Making my first YouTube Video

After almost a decade of creating videos professionally, I've decided to try something a bit different and put myself in front of the camera...I won't lie, it was a tad nerve-wracking but it can only get better from here...right? Go easy on me!

Why I decided to start making YouTube videos

Honestly…why not, right? I decided to start creating YouTube videos for two main reasons.

  1. The UK is currently in lockdown due to the 2020 Global Covid-19 pandemic.

  2. I believe I have some useful knowledge that, hopefully, others might appreciate.

Part of the reason why I have not started making YouTube videos until now is partly that I didn’t want to just mindlessly add to the increasing amount of “content” that is thrown out there, every second of every day. It is also partly because the idea of putting myself out there was terrifying! it still is in all fairness, but what’s the worse that can happen?

What I have planned for my YouTube channel

To start with, I plan to put out a range of how to’s, top tips and that kind of thing, all related to cinematography, editing and filmmaking in general.

I’m then hoping to move onto more of behind the scenes type videos/ vlogs, where I can dive deeper into my thought process and workflow for video production. This is, of course, providing that “normal” filming will be back eventually.

I also plan to put out a range of what I would call “boring videos”, however, to me and possibly to others, these are exactly the kind of videos I love to watch. Things file, file management, backing up data and data naming conventions…you know…the fun stuff.

It’s just a bit of fun!

I think what it boils down to, is that like a lot us creative types right now, I’m stuck at home and looking for something to do. This gives me the perfect excuse to film, edit and just create!

Behind the scenes

I ended up making a custom LUT in Resolve that I could use with my SmallHD in order to monitor what it actually looks like under those lighting conditions, and so I can keep consistent colour for future videos.

I went with low key lighting as that’s what I like! I didn’t end up using my cheap lights as they were too harsh and I ultimately ended up diffusing the window with the transparent part of a very thin 5 in 1 reflector thing from Amazon.
